چکیده

This paper discusses the Instrument Pointing Frame (IPF) Kalman Filter, which is an algorithm developed for focal plane calibration of NASA’s Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF). The IPF Kalman filter is a high-order square-root iterated linearized Kalman filter which is parametrized specifically for calibrating the telescope focal plane and aligning the science instrument arrays with respect to the telescope boresight. The most stringent calibration requirement specifies an alignment accuracy of 0.14 arcseconds, 1-sigma, radial. In order to achieve this level of accuracy, the filter carries 37 states to estimate desired frames while also correcting for systematic errors in pointing. The estimated pointing frames and calibration parameters are essential for precision telescope pointing, and end-to-end “pixels on the sky” ground pointing reconstruction.

An Overview of the Pointing Control System for Nasa’s Space Infra-red Telescope Facility (sirtf)

This paper discusses the pointing control system for NASA’s Space Infra-Red Telescope Facility (SIRTF). After an introduction to the SIRTF mission and telescope, an overview is given of the pointing control hardware, pointing control architecture, pointing requirements and capability, attitude constraints and commanding, attitude observers and required calibrations.

The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF)

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) contains three focal plane instruments, one of which is the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). IRAC is a four-channel camera that provides simultaneous 5.12 × 5.12 arcmin images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8 microns. The pixel size is 1.2 arcsec in all bands. Two adjacent fields of view in the SIRTF focal plane are viewed by the four channels in pairs (3.6 and...

Photometric Calibrations for the Sirtf Infrared Spectrograph

The SIRTF InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) is faced with many of the same calibration challenges that were experienced in the ISO SWS calibration program, owing to similar wavelength coverage and overlapping spectral resolutions of the two instruments. Although the IRS is up to ∼300 times more sensitive and without moving parts, imposing unique calibration challenges on their own, an overlap in phot...

Extragalactic Spectroscopy with SIRTF/IRS

The Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) is one of the three instruments on board the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) to be launched in December 2001. The IRS will provide high resolution spectra (R≈600) from 10–37 μm and low resolution spectra (R≥60) from 5–40 μm. Its high sensitivity and “spectral mapping”-mode make it a powerful instrument for observing both faint point-like and extended so...

Beyond the Cosmic Veil: Star and Planet Formation Research after SIRTF and NGST

How do planets form from circumstellar disks of gas and dust? What physical processes are responsible for determining the final masses of forming stars and ultimately the initial mass function (IMF)? The Hubble Space Telescope has made major contributions in helping to address these fundamental questions. In the next decade, the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) and the Next Generation ...
